Thanks Denise. I agree that sometimes it is difficult to look at the cause of the behavior rather than analyze what the student is needing. It becomes even more difficult when the student uses inappropriate words. However, all students have a voice and it is important to listen:-)).

When seeking to identify the cause or reason for a behavior, another question to ask yourself is: "What does this student NEED? What is he or she seeking to GET from this behavior?" If it is power, we can look for authentic, appropriate ways to give the student power; if it's attention, we can look for ways to give the student positive attention.

Thank you Kyle for taking the time to post this information. I want to take a minute to introduce Kyle to my readers. Kyle is a senior at Ottawa High School in Ottawa, IL. I had the privilege of spending time with Kyle about a current research project on the impact of using technology (more specifically, iPads) in the classroom. This young man is conducting surveys, collecting data, and presenting a report on this topic. He was kind enough to share some of his "tech" knowledge with me and I am thankful that he has done the same here.

Thanks Kyle!!!!

Hey this is Kyle davault and I am a high school student who has spent the past semester trying to implement new technology into the classroom. I have spent a great deal of time with the iPad and have found some amazing applications every high school student should have.

iTrade - free - iPod - it is a simulated stock market which resets every month.

Shakespeare in bits - free ( 14.99 for full version) -iPad only - this will read shakespear to you and it will show a video on one half and the script on the other half. And for those who cannot understand it, they will change old English to new English for you.

Algebra touch - 1.99 - iPad and iPod - this is one of the best math apps available. It goes through Order of operations and helps students solve equations by moving the numbers from one side to another. It constantly updates and is always coming out with more options. Oh and you can create your own equations!!

Math board - 4.99 - iPad only - this is another awesome math app. This one will allow you to customize every aspect of your equation and you can have addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I was tutoring a student with this app and he did 50 non stop problems and was upset that I had to give it to the next student.

Flashcards+ - free- iPod - this is the best free note card app available. This allows you to create notecards offline and right on your iPod. ( no card limit)

EMD PTE - free - iPad and iPod - this is a free periodic table. I would recommend this because you can color code the different sections and it gives you all the information you need for your chemistry class, and it's FREE!

I have over 85 applications I have downloaded and found a significant use throughout my school. If. You would like the complete list feel free to email me at davault2011@yahoo.com

Hi TJ, I had you as a presenter a couple weeks ago in San Jose. I was part of the group that made you feel better :) Haha. Just wanted to let you know, I read your blogs that next day, love them. And I just recently had to give a presentation to the board, and used the last sentence from this blog to finish it (with giving credit to you, of course). Thank you again for all the wisdom you dropped on us that first day!

scratch.mit.edu Check out this site. It is an animation site developed by MIT students. My son got a huge laugh out of watching me play with the site as I "learning" how to build an animation for better than an hour. Then the turkey, my son, did more in 5 minutes than I did the entire time I was "learning".
